Well, all the time I could have spent working on Kickpuncher.
I almost lost all my dwarves. I found the perfect spot - some river, some trees, a mountainous cliff face. The river turned out to be frozen for half the year, and I botched some channels during the first year and lost a lot of footing (and dwarves to dehydration). For some reason, poor sucker migrants kept pouring in. I got the water issue dealt with, the large part of which was flooding an underground chamber to make it arable, and I planted my few precious seeds. During the warm months I set the majority of my dwarves to hunt and fish, and that keeps the fort manageable until the merchants come with stores of food and drink. Ah! I love Dwarf Fortress.
Next time: Floodgates first, measure after, more floodgates after that, more floodgates. Put them in everywhere and often or risk your fort getting foolishly flooded. |
